Born in Kita, Mali, into the family Diabate with a Jeli (Griot) tradition dating back over 800 years, Cheick Hamala Diabate is recognized as one of the most famous ngoni Jelis in both the Malian and international communities.
ABOUT MUSIC FROM MALI
The music of Mali is dominated by forms derived from the ancient Mande Empire. The Mande people make up most of the country's population, and their musicians, professional performers called jeliw (sing. jeli, French griot), have produced a vibrant popular music scene alongside traditional folk music. Influences also come from the hundreds of ethnic groups surrounding Mali, as well as Moorish and European musical forms.

Several groups will mark Africa Malaria Day today by trying to raise awareness in the United States about the disease, which is the leading killer of preschool children and pregnant women in Africa.
A grass-roots group known as COUMBA (Conscientious Organizations Using Music to Bring Awareness) Foundation, uses African music and art to draw attention to the malaria problem.

Ali Farka Toure, one of Africas most famous musicians and one of the legends of Malian blues, died March 7 after a prolonged battle with an unidentified illness. Toure, who played many traditional instruments as well as electric guitar, won two Grammys one for his groundbreaking 1995 collaboration with Ry Cooder, Talking Timbuktu, and one this year for Best Traditional World Album for In The Heart Of The Moon. Inspired by American bluesmen like John Lee Hooker, Tour eventually went on to inspire many Western musicians. Toure was the mentor of Afel Bocoum, who collaborated with Damon Albarn on his 2002 album Mali Music.

Angelique Kidjo, whose work has garnered her three Grammy nominations, has cross-pollinated the West African traditions of her childhood in Benin with elements of American R&B, funk and jazz, as well as influences from Europe and Latin America. Throughout her career, she has collaborated with a diverse group of international artists like Santana and Gilberto Gil. Her duet with Dave Matthews on the song Iwoya,, which appeared on her last record Black Ivory Soul, was a critical success that helped diversify her fan base. The third part in a trilogy that previously explored African roots in music from the United States (Oremi) and Brazil (Black Ivory Soul), Oyaya! fuses African and French lyrics to music that draws upon musical traditions of the Caribbean Diaspora. With her husband, Jean Hebrail, Kidjo penned 13 original songs in a variety of indigenous Caribbean styles, including salsa, calypso, meringue and ska. Kidjo sings the numbers in English, French and African languages Yoruba and Fon.

African Childrens Literature and teaching beyond the stereotypes.
Coumba Makalou leads a discussion on teaching kids about Africa with a panel of award-winning childrens book authors.
Lesego Malepe, PH.D
Lesego Malepe left South Africa and earned her Ph.D at Boston University. She taught political science at a college near Boston for many years before she turned to writing full time. She has contributed op-ed pieces to many national newspapers before publishing Matters of Life and Death.
Deborah Ellis
A mental health professional before becoming an author of children's books. Deborah Ellis specializes in stories about children in crisis situations around the world. The Heaven Shop, CABA 2005 Honor Book for Older Readers, depicts the contemporary situation of AIDS orphans in Malawi. Her previous novels addressed the situation of Afghan refugees in Pakistan and in Toronto.
Ifeoma Onyefulu
An acclaimed photographer as well as author, Ifeoma was brought up in eastern Nigeria. Using simple, clear writing, and the eye of her camera lens, Ifeoma Onyefulu reveals the rich diversity of Nigerian life and culture. She introduces people to different aspects of her culture by exploring familiar themes like the alphabet, numbers, colors and the family. She has published eleven children's books. Her picture book Here Comes Our Bride! is the CABA 2005 Best Book for Young Children.
Allan Stratton
Allan Stratton, is an internationally award-winning playwright, novelist, actor and teacher. His novel Chanda's Secrets is the CABA 2005 Best Book for Older Readers, and The American Library Association's 2005 Michael L. Printz Honor Book. It is being published in the U.S.A., Germany, France, Japan, Korea, China, Great Britain, South Africa India, Australia Slovenia and elsewhere.
